Started in the 70’s, the Conjunto Palmeiras is located to the south of Fortaleza; 32 thousand residents live in an area of approximately 120 acres.
Away from the commercial and political centers of interest of the capital of Ceará, the residents of Conjunto Palmeiras learnt very early to fight for their rights. The popular organization brought not only visibility to itself, but victory over important rights such as treated water, the construction of public schools, health centers and, among others, a Citizen Centre.
The history of struggles can be vividly experienced and shared in Conjunto Palmeiras. For such, it is possible to get to know successful experiences of solidarity-based socio-economics sustaining human development in the community, such as the Palmas Bank and the community-based kitchen of the Mulheres em Movimento Association.
It is the women, supported by their family, who are in charge of managing community-based tourism in Conjunto Palmeiras. There, they offer accommodation and food services. In the Association, the tourism group is prepared to show the visitor a Fortaleza full of cultural diversity, with its traditionally promoted tourist sites and, also, new spaces for solidarity-based exchanges and popular participation.
You will need, nevertheless, to be prepared to experience one of the many poor and violent neighborhoods of the city.
